Song of the copper bear

Tonight the wind cat plays with the copper bear that flies above the house. The dogs go to the door. It is dark, time to walk the village bounds before sleep. She rises to go and as She opens the door some of the night rushes into the house. Moonshadow fingers of winterbone trees dapple the ground with dark and silver. I slip through the door, out from the light and into the night, to follow.
She turns. " Go back. It's cold. Stay warm in the house," She says.
But I jump up, into Her arms, a ginger scarf and gloves of bright fur to warm Her as they walk. She pushes Her face into flame fur and we warm each other as She carries me around beneath star and sky and bright moon. As we near the house again its lights shine out a welcome. She breathes in the scent of cat and sighs, holding me close.
" I love you, Maurice."
We close the door on the darkness.
Outside the wind cat still plays with the copper bear. In the wind, the copper bear sings.

I think that I know how you feel when you hug Maurice and whisper loving words to him. When my beloved Oscar cat was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor nearly four years ago, I had a precious three months with him before, in kindness, it was time to put him down. He maintained his cheerful, funny and affectionate personality to the very last moment. Each hug I gave him was a mingling of joy and the foreboding that he would soon be leaving me. I hope that Maurice will have many months yet.

I wonder who is more fortunate: Maurice who has you to love him or you to have Maurice to love.

A tear for me, too.

No fear, only cheer, for dear Maurice and you as you savor the memory of your cuddle-walk.

Stay warm and safe Maurice. I'm in the warm studio with my Tabby sister and the studio boss, who often ignores me - but I have cunning plans to get her attention ;-)

The North wind has started to blow in the east where we live and the sky is inky black - we're sending warm purrs to you Maurice.

These memories of walking in the cold night with a cat hugging your neck are the best ones to keep. Burrowing your nose in warm cat is a pleasure I love to do. Only real cat lovers can understand this. Love you Maurice and your litter mates.. I check here every morning to see how you are.
