She went away and returned with a mirror, so now we can see our reflected glory. Beautiful ginger, we glow like firecats.
This morning the ground was crisp white with a shawl that the moon had thrown down and spread across the fields. As the sun rose into the morning sky she stole away its bone white beauty and warmed the land but when evening came the cold bit again at the air.
Inside the house is warm. We melt in ginger pools across soft cushions.
The house seems a little lost still without Martha. The people sometimes stop when walking across a room and look around as if they have lost something, until they find it is only the memory of her fragile beauty that has slipped their minds for a moment.
Well, I HAD to vote this as the cat's pyjamas, that is cute and original.
ReplyDeleteMartha was beautiful! You should read "Cat Heaven". Awesome book about cats going to heave and what it's like there for them....sitting on God's counters, sleeping on clouds, etc. Very sweet!
ReplyDeleteThere is always something to remind us of the ones who are no longer there--and a feeling that if we turn quickly enough we will see a tail or whiskers just vanishing from some familiar spot.
ReplyDeleteBut Martha is still there, warming her fur just outside your angle of vision. You can catch a few glimpses of her in the mirror, if you look in from the corner of your eyes...
ReplyDeleteThe house is gentley haunted by Martha. Not by Kiffer. He is in the shed chasing ghost rats. Sometimes Arthur, Martha's brother comes by, but mostly he wanders the hills. And Hannah is missing Martha who she always thought of as her cat, who would always sleep on her bed and sing her cat lullabies. There was something of Martha is The Snow Leopard book.
ReplyDeleteShe can still remember very clearl, what Martha looked like, even the small kitten ball of a cat.
Four cats still fill the house, and the cat dynamics have changed as Max is much more evident. Maybe because it is winter, almost.
And Maurice is ill and already She greives and this is why there are fewer postings here. Maurice, so much wrapped around Her heart, always.
Jackie I have been away from reading blogs for a while and missed the post about Martha. She had many years with you but it is still hard to let them go. I love the idea of her flying free in the sky but like you say, she is a cat and may have other ideas!

Good to have you back, Jackie. We are still sad about Martha, too. xx
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear Maurice is not well, tickle his ears for me.
ReplyDeleteI lost Harry cat recently and still 'see' him around the house, especially when there's chicken or fish on the menu!
Love to the gingers and others!

<> for Maurice and for you
ReplyDeleteSamhain comes in the waning season, when the world settles down for its winter sleep. It is a time of introspection and remembrance. Here, we also have been thinking of those who have gone on ahead. All of us remember Jett, our grand old man, but only one of us remembers sweet Sister. Still, and always, the wheel turns.
ReplyDeleteWe are thinking of you prayerfully, Maurice, and of your Lady, and wishing you soft cushions by warm fires, bro.
I simply adore reading your beautiful poetic prose. I'm so surprised that some giant publisher hasn't approached you to formally publish this lovely, lovely blog.
ReplyDeleteLovely to see that flaming ginger fur in a mirror. So long as she is remembered in all the little moments, Martha remains. One paw on memories and a purr in your ear when you sleep.
ReplyDeleteLovely to see them curled up like that too. The epitome of comfort and warmth.
Hope you are also keeping warm too, wrapped in cat and duvet!
Nice to see you back Jackie but sorry to hear about Maurice. What with Kiffer and Martha its not been a good year. I want you to know that you and the Ginger Darlings are very much part of my life. I think about you all, often during the day. I send positive thoughts and love to you all.
ReplyDeleteSo hard to say goodby to them, but the memories are good and they had a good life.
ReplyDeleteCats are great.

Maurice, beautiful boy who knows how much he is loved. In my mind you will always stand on the signpost, showing us the way.
ReplyDeleteFor now, enjoy the warmth of your home and those who love you.
I am so sorry to hear of Maurice ailing. I lost three old cats in the last year, and I do fel their soft ghosts in the house. There are three new cats now, not kittens but grown cats who came much too close to the door at the end of the hall at the local Animal Control. We are all getting used to each other, and Ben, who is now the senior cat at four, is showing them how to live with the collies. I know life goes on and I like that, but I still feel tears for those old cats.
