Somewhere, the moon.

Walking the twilight village and the sky is like the under belly of a fish. As I rest in Her arms She is reminded that a year has passed and I am still here. As She feels the weight of me, the warmth of me, the great purring life in me, She is glad. A whole year of time, and in that year She has spent too much time painting and not enough time walking with me. Now the weight of my tail resting wrapped around Her cold arm shows Her that I forgive Her the time She has wasted in not being with a cat.
Bats fly. The growing darkness is lit by flickers of moth flit.
I purr. She walks. Somewhere the moon watches.

  1. I am so glad that Maurice is still with you--perhaps it is not a cancer there inside him. Parting with Kiffer is more than enough cat sorrow for one year.

Today we had no less that seven 'gingers' at my place of work, I thought about you ;)
Such a lovely piece of writing.

  4. I can imagine the peace of your walk and the pleasure of Maurice's company. Time is never wasted when spent in the company of a cat.

  5. Purrrrs to you and your mistress. We know that time is different for these human-creatures and we forgive easily. Thank you for reminding us what love is all about, being held and catnip!

  9. I rejoice with you in marking together the passage of an important year and for remembering that each day together is important and precious. Precious like you, dear cat.

  10. "Darkness lit by flickers of moth flit" -- what a beautiful image! Makes my whiskers twitch. They're not worth eating, moths, but so much fun to catch.

    Rubs, old man.

  11. Thank goodness I'm going down to the shelter this afternoon and will just get to hold those poor homeless creatures. I look at them and think, well I may not be able to take you home but your purrs tell me that I have given you an extra ten minutes of happiness in your life.

  13. So pleased about your beautiful Maurice, Jackie. When our beloved Billy had massive heart failure, the vet said "bring him back in a week but don't hold your breath" He was with us for another eight and a half years - 6 tablets day! Love to you all and hope the pain of losing your beautiful Kiffer's is becoming easier to bear. Maggie x

  14. Beautiful words! I have been giving my very old cat attention, too. He is totally deaf, and cannot walk very well. Things confuse him, now. I have to be patient, or I will regret it one day.......

  16. Time spent with a cat is never watwed- it is time invested.
I agree with Mornings Minion- losing Kiffer was grief enough for one year. Here's to many more moonlit bat walks with Maurice

  17. The four of us here at Red Hill (and Her, too, of course) are glad you are feeling well enough for a walk, Maurice... and glad you forgive her for spending so much time alone upstairs working on her "scribbles" (which are nice, by-the-by). Now that the Bears are all on the page and out in the world, she can spend more time with YOU.

  18. Wonderful and evocative. Made me feel if only for a moment, but a precious one, that a certain cat was in my arms too, the soft fur and the purr filling my bones...

    Thank you.
