Feathers.

When we walk She gathers feathers. We are not sure whether they fall from flying birds or whether this is how birds grow. First a feather is planted in the ground and then more grow around it until there is a whole bird. We think that She is collecting feathers until She has enough to make some wings and we hope that they will be wings for us.

Be warned. Hasn't Martha the Old One told you the tale, the tale that even my cat Jasper knows, Jasper who has a kibble for a brain?

Let Martha tell you of Daedapuss and Icapuss, who collected feathers to make wings much as you would have Her do. No cat can be trusted not to fly too near the sun, they are like moths with candles.

I think you are right about how a bird is grown. It looks like you might be able to grow a very good bird with all those feathers.

Is this, maybe, what she does with the feathers?...

Martha has a mind full of stories. She knows of the foolish Icapuss, who used wax to make his wings and flew too close to the flame of the sun. But she also knows of Wayland, who collected feathers for the making of wings. Maybe she will be persauded to tell this lesser known story of human greed and the power of love.
